OpenAI Acquires Astral, Maker of Python's uv and ruff
OpenAI acquired Astral, the company founded by Charlie Marsh behind three widely adopted Python developer tools: the ruff linter and formatter, the uv package manager, and the ty type checker. uv has become the default Python packaging path for a large share of the ecosystem, making this a supply-chain-relevant move rather than a routine acqui-hire.
Why It Matters
Ownership of foundational open-source developer tooling moving inside a frontier AI lab is worth tracking regardless of what OpenAI does with it next — it puts a chunk of Python's daily-driver infrastructure under one commercial roof.
