IBM Survey: 76% of Large Enterprises Now Hiring a Chief AI Officer
An IBM survey of 2,000 CEOs at companies with a median annual revenue of $5.8 billion shows 76% have or are hiring a Chief AI Officer in 2026, up from 26% in 2024 — a tripling in 24 months. A separate IBM study of 600 CAIOs found 57% were promoted internally rather than hired externally. The adoption bottleneck: 86% of employees have the skills to use AI but only 25% actually do — a 61-point gap that defines what CEOs are now paying CAIOs to close.
Why It Matters
The CAIO role is tripling in adoption faster than the CISO role did post-internet. The majority of organizations will be led on AI by a promoted internal domain expert, not an external hire — redefining what enterprise AI transformation looks like structurally.
